What to buy this Winter? Humidifier or Dehumidifier?

Nov 3, 2021

Humidity is the term that refers to the amount of moisture in the air. For us humans to be comfortable, we require a certain level of humidity. So, to try to balance out the humidity in their favor, people use equipment like humidifiers and dehumidifiers.

A humidifier is a device that increases the moisture in its immediate atmosphere while e dehumidifier removes excess moisture from the air. Ultimately, a person’s demand will identify which one should be used. Normally, the level of humidity in your home has close relation with the quality of indoor air. So, Patel Heating and Cooling offers humidifiers and dehumidifiers to all householders and commercial enterprises.

This was all about Humidity. But actually, what to buy this winter??

Humidifier vs Dehumidifier

During Winter, the level of humidity of Indoor space fluctuates as per the climate. The most comfortable humidity level is believed to be between 30-50%. However, too much humidity or dryness in the air can have deleterious effects on the individual’s health and can cause symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue. Dry air can exacerbate respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, allergies, nose bleeds, sinusitis and many more by causing dryness in the trachea. So, it is essential to maintain humidity inside the home.

On summer days, it is necessary to lower the humidity level inside because of the hot atmosphere outside. On the other hand, in cool and dry environments of winter, people like to utilize a humidifier more than a dehumidifier. Generally, humidifiers use a range of mechanisms to force extra moisture into the air, increasing its humidity. An evaporator humidifier employs a fan to run air through a damp filter soaked in a reservoir of water. As the dry air passes through, some of the water evaporates, adding moisture to the air and combating the dryness of the air. Finally, it facilitates breathing and makes your home warmer.

The continuous entering of cold air can dry the indoor air immensely so weather stripping is the best option to prevent the entering of cold air from leaks or holes. Also, advanced humidifiers have gauges that can show the current humidity level. Sometimes, it also can be checked by observing condensation on your windows. If you do see condensation on your windows, try adjusting your humidifier so you can lower the humidity level and fix the problem.

Signs you need a humidifier

  • Gaps and cracks in furniture, flooring and structural components.
  • Your family experiencing chapped lips, nose bleeding or dry skin and air.
  • Shocking encounters with your family.
  • Your home is not well insulated and has dry cold air.

Which are the perfect humidity levels for winter?

Even if in winter you are using a dehumidifier for health purposes, be careful that your humidity level should not fall below 30%.

Because it leads to the accumulation of frost and moisture that can adversely affect the HVAC system and indoor air quality.

Normally, well-insulated homes don’t need this kind of equipment during winter, though you are depending on it because of poor indoor air quality, it may be another problem that needs to be addressed by HVAC professionals.
